Dean Winstanley at the European Championships

This year’s three-day European Championship event kicks off today when the 32 players compete in the first round in Germany, with Deano playing a well known opponent, the Belgium star Kim Huybrechts.

The £250,000 tournament, featuring an increased prize fund this year, will be televised live on ITV4 from the RWE Sporthalle in Muelheim, Germany.

Friday October 24
Afternoon Session (1.45pm-6pm local time, 12.45pm-5pm UK)

Round 1:  Dean Winstanley 5-6 Kim Huybrechts

0-1 – Huybrechts lands a 180 and finishes a 14-darter to claim the opening leg.
1-1 – Double two sees Winstanley level the game.
1-2 – Double eight edges the Belgian back ahead.
2-2 – Winstanley fires in his first 180 of the game, with both players initially missing their chances to take the leg before the Yorlshireman returns to finish double ten.
2-3 – Double four sees Huybrehts move back in front.
3-3 – Tops for Winstanley sees a sixth successive leg go with the throw.
3-4 – WInstanley lands a 180, but misses the bull to break throw as Huybrechts finishes tops to move back ahead.
4-4 – Winstanley levels with a superb 11-darter, landing a 180 before finishing 98 on double 19.
4-5 – Winstanley misses two more darts at doubles to break, and Huybrechts finishes double 16 to move a leg away from the win.
5-5 – Huybrechts lands his second 180 of the game, but Winstanley finishes double five to send the game into a decider.
5-6 – A dramatic final leg sees Huybrechts initially miss the bull for victory, only for Winstanley to miss tops to finish 112, allowing the Belgian back in to post double eight to edge the win.
